Michelin North America, Inc. (“Michelin”) is proud to announce the annual Michelin Challenge Design to celebrate, promote, publicize and give visibility to original creative thinking and innovation in vehicle design.  By embracing and supporting design, Michelin aims to establish a closer relationship with the design community, combining technical innovation with transportation design to create vehicles that consumers want to buy and will enjoy driving.  Michelin challenges the international design community, individuals, small and large companies and universities, to enthusiastically create innovative and aesthetically pleasing design solutions that will meet the theme requirements of the Michelin Challenge Design 2016.
Mobility for All
Designing for the Next Frontier
Mobility is essential for personal transport, commerce, growth and access to clean water, health care and services for people around the world. Access to sustainable mobility is one of the cornerstones of economic and social progress, yet hundreds of millions of people have little or no access to mobility.
The Michelin Challenge Design theme for 2016 is “Mobility For All – Designing for the Next Frontier”. The challenge is to design a personal, family or commercial vehicle that provides simple, functional and affordable mobility to an underserved area in Southeast Asia, Central America, Central Africa or an area that you identify.
Just as the Citroen 2CV, Volkswagen Beetle and Ford Model T became iconic vehicles in their respective regions by enabling mobility; your design will help provide mobility to an area in need.
The flexibility, ingenuity, simplicity, ease of use and repair of your vehicle will be among the criteria used in judging your entry.
Michelin Challenge Design will recognize exciting and passionate designs that employ innovative vehicle architecture and technologies, without compromising functionality, safety or comfort. The vehicle’s capabilities must include dimensional specifications and visual detail of the tire/wheel assembly.
Deliverables:
  • 2D renderings/drawings/sketches illustrating vehicle architecture from a minimum of three perspectives—at least one with context of people and intended driving environment.
  • 2D renderings/drawings/sketches illustrating the tire and wheel assembly, including dimensions and specifications.
  • A brief (200 word) essay on how your design of a personal, family or commercial vehicle provides simple, functional and affordable mobility to an underserved area in Southeast Asia, Central America, Central Africa or an area that you identify? Please state the underserved area that you have chosen and explain why?
DESIGN PROPERTIES TO BE DISPLAYED:
  1. Concept models, in scale and full-size form
  2. Concepts in two dimensions
  3. Sketches, computer-generated renderings, engineering drawings
PARTICIPANTS:
  1. OEM design studios
  2. Independent design studios
  3. Individual designers
  4. Academic Transportation Design students and teams
  5. Automotive suppliers
JURY EVALUATES ENTRIES ON FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
  • Relevance to the theme
  • Concept originality
  • Design value and quality
  • Developmental potential
  • Design displayability

Adalah suatu ironi yang menyedihkan jika bangsa Indonesia yang mampu membuat pesawat terbang nasional tidak mampu membuat sebuah motor nasional sendiri. Selama puluhan tahun, industri dan pasar otomotif Indonesia dikuasai oleh vendor-vendor dari Jepang, tetapi hal itu tidak membuat bangsa Indonesia mampu mengembangkan teknologi otomotif secara mandiri malah semakin membuat bangsa ini semakin tergantung oleh teknologi dari Jepang. Memang transfer teknologi, sumber daya manusia kita memiliki kemampuan memproduksi komponen-komponen otomotif di dalam negeri sendiri, sayangnya hal itu untuk menyuplai kebutuhan komponen otomotif vendor Jepang di dalam negeri maupun di luar negeri. Indonesia tidak diperbolehkan membuat produk-produk otomotif dengan merek atau brand sendiri dengan menggunakan teknologi dari Jepang.
